As one European free speech martyr, Ernst Zundel, is released from prison, another one takes his place in the EU gulag. A Spanish court has sentenced Barcelona bookshop owner Pedro Varela to two years and nine months in prison for “spreading racist propaganda.” The court ruled that Varela spread ideas “favorable to genocide.” In fact none of the books Varela sold were favorable in any way to genocide. Varela has always condemned all human rights violations against peoples. He was charged with “racism” for simply selling a book in his bookstore by a leading British scientist on racial differences. A book which advocated no repression or harm against anyone. He was also ordered to pay a fine of 2,880 euros (3,945 dollars). Prosecutors had asked for a four-year prison sentence.

The court rejected Varela’s defense that he belonged to no political party and that there were no banned books in Spain. During the trial, Varela said “I am not saying there was not persecution of the Jews, and I have always condemned forcefully any persecution that existed, but there should be traditional academic investigation, criticism and challenge on historical events.” Brief English summary from EarthTimes; Spanish-language media reports from El Pais and EFE. So, they seek to throw him in prison not for denying crimes against Jews in the Second World War but for simply selling books in his shop that historically argue numbers of which there is considerable dispute even among mainstream Jewish researchers.

This represents Pedro Varela’s third time through the Spanish justice system over free speech issues. In 2006, Varela was arrested on Holocaust denial and justification of genocide charges, convicted on the justification charge, and sentenced to seven months in prison after a 2008 trial, but avoided incarceration at the time because he lacked a prior criminal record. Previously, on November 16th, 1998, a Barcelona criminal court found Varela guilty of inciting racial hatred and of denying or justifying genocide, and sentenced him to five years imprisonment and a fine of 720,000 pesetas (about $5,000). The conviction was suspended by the Catalonia Provincial Court on April 30th, 1999 when the three judges of the Audencia court in Barcelona unanimously declared that the law under which he had been convicted may have violated Article 20 of the Spanish Constitution, which guarantees the rights of free speech and free expression of opinion.

Ultimately, a Constitutional Tribunal sided with the provincial court, deciding in 2007 to decriminalise a presumption that was included in the reform of the Penal Code of 1996. Article 607.2 anticipates punishments of up to two years in jail for whoever, “by any means” diffuses “ideas or doctrines that deny or justify” the Holocaust. The Tribunal found that this clause limited a fundamental right, the right to freedom of expression, since it punished the diffusion of ideas “without demanding any other element, such as affronts, or inciting to attack groups.”

In 2007, Pedro Varela published Dr. David Duke’s Spanish-language translation of his book, “Jewish Supremacism”. The two launched a joint book tour for Dr. Duke. The November 2007 Spanish news video embedded below shows one of the joint appearances of Dr. Duke and Pedro Varela — and also shows Spanish Marxists staging a riot in protest. Ironically, a nonviolent man who has harmed no one is facing almost three years in prison while communist terrorists who rioted, burned property, who physically harmed police and bystanders, who sought bodily harm against other humans simply because of their viewpoint — were let off with only a slap on the wrist!

Slave Trafficking in the Twentieth Century

The Morgenthau Plan of 1944 provided for the use of German prisoners of war as forced labor in those countries that had been at war with the Reich after it was beaten. This plan was carried out with cool brutality from the first day on which hostilities ceased.

It has not been possible to conduct a full and thorough investigation on the number of POWs held as forced laborers at the end of hostilities, given the Soviet refusal [as of 1982 when this book was published – Ed.] to provide data in this regard. Nor have the Western Allies (the English and the French in particular) wanted to provide information on the subject. Nevertheless, it has been possible to obtain some very significant data, which we will expose here.

According to the British Chambers Encyclopedia, under the heading “Slave Labor,” it is estimated that by the end of the war the Russians used as forced laborers around five million German soldiers, prisoners of war, and about three quarters of a million imprisoned soldiers of other nationalities: mostly Romanians and Italians, but also Hungarians, Slovaks, Bulgarians and Finns. Very little has ever been heard of these slaves. [Henrik Holappa, told me his own maternal grandfather was a Soviet slave laborer, and never recovered mentally from the ordeal. He died at 51 in 1965.]

Descending to particulars, and according to data from an obsessively anti-Nazi West German magazine, Stern [footnote1], the Soviets captured about a hundred thousand German soldiers at Stalingrad. Only six thousand of them returned home toward the end of 1950 – i.e., they had remained in a state of slavery for five years, and during peacetime.

The other ninety-four thousand died as a result of a treatment unworthy even of slaves that they had received. And if we return to the general case of the five million Germans and 750,000 Europeans of other nationalities kept by the Soviets as slaves, the contributors to the Encyclopedia Chambers agree that it is very difficult to figure with any semblance of certainty how many perished in slavery, because it is not possible to prove, in legal terms, that the Russian claim is a clumsy lie that many prisoners, at the end of their captivity, preferred to stay in the Soviet Union.

The efforts of the Red Cross to individually trace many prisoners of war, especially Germans and Italians, failed completely. We do not believe that nearly six million slaves perished, but it is undeniable that a significant proportion of them died from abuse, and the remainder, dispersed throughout the entire USSR as forced laborers, remained in a state of slavery under the Soviet God-state, lost forever to their homelands and to themselves as free men

But it was not only the USSR. The British government, several years after the war, was severely reprimanded by the International Red Cross not only for using POWs as forced laborers, but for treating them in an inhuman fashion, going so far as to allow them to die of starvation and cold in many proven cases. According to the International Red Cross, a year and a half after the end of the war England had 460,000 German soldiers who were forced to work for her. At that time it was calculated that the British Labor government earned 250,000,000 pounds annually for renting out their German slaves; these slaves were, in fact, provided to British farmers and industry for a figure between 7.50 and 10.00 pounds a week [about $30-40 per week in American dollars in 2009]. The slaves were paid a maximum of six pence (i.e., between 5% and 7.5% of what was surrendered to the government) so that they could pay for their lodging (!?). To the honor of the English people let it be said that such a wave of popular outrage was unleashed that at the end of 1946 the Labor government of Clement Atlee had to actually be clement and release prisoners at the rate of 15,000 every month. Thus, the last batch of prisoners returned to Germany in June 1949, four years after the end of the conflict. [footnote2]. The International Red Cross, from its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland categorized the Allied treatment of prisoners of war in terms of extreme clarity:

“The United States, England and France, two years after the end of the war, are violating the agreements of the International Red Cross by their inhumane treatment of prisoners of war — agreements they solemnly signed in 1929.”

Observe that the note by the International Red Cross makes no reference to the USSR, which had not signed such agreements, and had never recognized the International Red Cross.

As we believe we know something about the cynicism of human nature, generally speaking, we are sure many readers will reply that, given what the Germans did to their prisoners, the treatment of German prisoners was natural and valid. To this we must reply:

a) The Germans only used Soviet prisoners as war-time workers because they did not have any obligation to the contrary, as the USSR had not signed the Geneva Convention on prisoners. Moreover, the Germans knew of the treatment their own prisoners were receiving in Russia. In any event, the Geneva Convention authorized the employment of prisoners of war in certain jobs such as agriculture and non-war related industry. In these jobs British, French and American POWs were used by the Germans. At any rate, there were foreign workers in Germany, especially French, as had been specified in the articles of the Franco-German Armistice of 1940. Other French had gone voluntarily to work in Germany [footnote3]. But again — and we believe that the qualification is important — all this occurred in time of actual war 1940-45, while the use of slaves by the patented champions of International Law happened in peacetime, after the war ended in 1945, and in cold blood according to plan, and n many millions of cases, and for commercial purposes, and for five peacetime years at least in the USSR, and four in England.

b) Germany’s treatment of prisoners of war was, except for isolated cases beyond the control of the central command, correct. Allan Wood, one of the most popular British war correspondents wrote:

“The most surprising aspect of this war in the West, when it comes to atrocities, is their low number. The cases are very rare in which I have found that the Germans did not treat their prisoners in accordance with the Geneva Conventions and the recommendations of the Red Cross. [footnote4]

Lieutenant Newton L. Marguiles, U.S Assistant Judge Advocate, said at the Jefferson Barracks, Saint Louis, Missouri, on April, 27th,1945:

“The Germans, even in moments of utmost despair, treated their captives well and obeyed the Geneva Convention in all respects. [footnote5].

Let us mention in passing that Lt. Marguiles was Jewish.

The American Red Cross, in 1945, officially acknowledged that 99% of American POWs in Germany returned to their homes safe and sound.[footnote6].

The Allies, therefore, did not even have the excuse that they were merely retaliating against German POWs for Reich abuses against their prisoners. The Allies used the Germans as slaves because it suited them to do so, and that is all.

As Sir Winston Churchill said: “We fight for freedom!”

July 20th – September 27th, 1936

In July of 1936, the people of Spain revolted against their tyrannical and murderous Communist government. The uprising was led by General Francisco Franco and had the support of most (although not all) of the Spanish military, the Catholic Church, the middle classes, and a very large section of normal working class people as well. The popular left-wing myth that the Spanish Civil War was nothing more than a “military coup” is unfounded; the fact that Franco was able to establish a stable and relatively prosperous society that lasted for over thirty years belies this.

When it became apparent that the initial rising in Madrid had failed, the Nationalist supporters in Toledo, which is 40 miles to the southwest of the capital, declared for Franco and occupied the military academy in the ancient Alcazar fortress. The garrison was mainly drawn from the local Guardia Civil and Falange, but also included about a hundred teenaged military cadets, a large number of women and children as well as nuns and priests who had fled to the fort for safety from the marauding Communist militia and the Asaltos or Assault Guards, who were the Republic’s paramilitary goon squads. This motley crew of resistance fighters was led by the Commandant of the Academy, Colonel Jose Moscardo.

At that time Toledo was a Nationalist island surrounded by Republican-held territory, and it was psychologically as well as strategically vital that the Red government in Madrid recover the fortress as soon as possible. They despatched a large force of militia, Asaltos, army troops who remained loyal to the government, “international brigades” and Soviet “advisors” as well as the dreaded POUM anarchist paramilitary gangs, to capture the Alcazar. Within days, the ancient castle was surrounded by hastily-built barricades and besieged with sniper and machine-gun fire.

One of the most famous incidents of Spanish heroism during the war took place on July 23rd, 1936. The Communist commander reached Moscardo by telephone within the Alcazar, and the Colonel was informed that Republican forces had arrested his 16 year old son, Luis, a cadet at the academy under his father’s command. Unless Moscardo surrendered immediately, Luis would be executed. To prove that they had his son, he was put to the phone to speak to his father.

The boy spoke up proudly, “Father, if you surrender your command to the enemies of Spain in order to save my life, I shall disown you and never more acknowledge you as my blood!”

His father replied “Die like a Spaniard, my son!” The enraged Communists then shot Luis in the head. In the Alcazar today, the telephone still remains on display.

Repeated assaults against the castle walls failed and resulted in heavy government casualties. The Reds had brought artillery with them, but only light field guns which could be shielded against through the extensive use of sandbagging on the ramparts, and they were such bad cannon shots that they often missed the huge castle completely and their shells fell on the hapless city. Then they ran out of shells entirely and the incompetent, bickering Republican staff in Madrid were unable to supply any more. Crude attempts at aerial bombing also failed.

For the next two months the defenders held out against the Republican units besieging them. Their only source of water was a cistern in the main courtyard; fortunately they were able to fill it up, because it took the Reds some time to figure out how to shut off the water mains. After that the hundreds of people in the fortress, many of them non-combatants, had to rely on rainwater caught in sheets and tarps.

In August they ran low on food and had to rely on nightly stealth foraging expeditions over the walls to raid a grocery warehouse the Nationalists knew about in town, but which the Reds had somehow overlooked. They also had to crawl down and scavenge ammunition by ambushing Republican sentry posts or looting the corpses of those killed in the day’s fighting.

Many local residents of Toledo who had remained behind in the city risked their lives to supply Moscardo and his men with food, ammunition, and intelligence on the enemy’s activities, and many were summarily tortured and executed because they were suspected, rightly or wrongly, of helping the Alcazar’s defenders or being in contact with them.

In mid-September the Reds brought in a sapper unit of anarchist Asturian miners, who tunneled beneath the walls and planted a large explosive charge which they detonated in a massive blast, bringing down a section of the wall. Now the Reds could gain partial entry into the Alcazar, and the fighting slowly progressed from building to building, floor to floor, room to room.

In the meantime General Franco was receiving regular reconnaissance reports from his air corps on the situation, and he realized that the Alcazar couldn’t hold out much longer. His army was marching on Madrid in four columns (hence General Molina’s famous remark about his “fifth column” inside the city.) Franco faced a choice. He could divert one of the columns to relieve the Alcazar and risk not having enough troops to capture the capital, or else he could ignore the sideshow in Toledo and concentrate on his main strategic objective.

Franco spent a whole night in thought and prayer, and in the morning he made his decision. “This is a matter of the honor of the Spanish Army. We cannot leave Moscardo and his heroes to their fate, as well as the women and children.” He ordered General Jose Varela to alter his line of march and storm Toledo. On September 27th, 1936, Nationalist troops from the Army of Africa entered the city. The Reds fled back to Madrid without much of a fight.

The raising of the siege of the Alcazar did much to enhance General Franco’s reputation, but the diversion of Varela’s troops from the advance on Madrid gave the capital’s defenders further time to prepare their defences, and time for Soviet supplies and weapons to arrive. Franco has been criticized by military historians for his decision, which may well have prolonged the Civil War, but for the rest of his life, he always maintained that he had been right to put honor before expediency.

Colonel Moscardo was promoted to the rank of General and later led the Spanish Blue Division of volunteers on the Eastern Front during World War Two.
