Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin DeadThe World Loves a Hero and Despises a Coward

Just hours after the news of the Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin’s death, people all over the world were lamenting the loss of this brave man, who was able to tackle crocodiles and handle poisonous snakes with amazing ease. Steve Irwin was not reckless. His father was an expert at handling poisonous snakes, and Steve inherited his dad’s quick reflexes and learned the trade. During his long career, Steve Irwin was never bitten by a poisonous snake.

Irwin was most famous for tackling good-sized alligators. This was another talent, he learned from his father who worked for the Australian government. Irwin was so comfortable around crocodiles that he even took his baby boy with him one time when he was feeding a croc. A crocodile can’t lunge forward with any great speed while on land and Irwin’s baby was in no real danger, but Irwin was repeatedly criticized for that one incident.

One news article reports “Irwin became famous for his seemingly death-defying skill with wild animals, including crocodiles and snakes… Later shows had a worldwide audience of 200 million, or 10 times the population of Australia. Terri became Irwin’s business partner and frequent on-screen collaborator. They had two children, Bindi Sue and Bob Clarence. News of Irwin’s death shocked ordinary Australians, while government and opposition lawmakers rushed to issue statements of condolence within two hours of the first reports of his death… ‘Everybody who met Steve was impressed with his energy and his enthusiasm, he was a real Aussie larrikin,’ she said. Irwin won a global following for his dare-devil antics… Irwin boasted that he had never been bitten by a venomous snake or seriously bitten by a crocodile, although admitted his worst injuries had been inflicted by parrots.”

The world loves a hero and Steve Irwin was a hero to many. Contrast Steve Irwin to the cabal of neocons, who attached themselves to the Bush regime. These include men who evaded military service during the Vietnam War, but who won’t hesitate to send volunteer soldiers to fight their empire wars. These cowardly “chickenhawks” won’t be missed when they die. Many Americans will spontaneously say “good riddance” when Paul Wolfowitz or Dick Cheney passes away. There definitely won’t be the universal mourning and sincere sadness that surrounds the death of Steve Irwin.
